M.Sgt. (Ret) Donald G. Myers passed while surrounded by his family at home in Wasilla. He battled cancer since 2008. He was in the ICU at Mat-Su Regional for seven days then came home with hospice.

A graveside service will be held at Ft. Richardson National Cemetery on Friday, May 26, 2017 at 1:30 PM. Mr. Myers was born in Marysville, CA on May 8, 1944, to E-5 Donald G. Myers and Virginia Rebecca Myers. He graduated from Lakeview High School and enlisted in the Army as a paratrooper. He married Linda Ellen Myers at Chesapeake, Ohio on June 6, 1964. He and his family were stationed at several airborne assignments to include Viet Nam in 1966-1967. He was on the only combat jump made in Viet Nam. Serving his country for 23 years, retiring at Ft. Richardson in 1984. He and his family have lived in Alaska for 14 years on and off, coming back to Alaska to be with his son, daughter, and grandchildren in 2009. During his retirement, he was instrumental in starting an American Legion in Dillingham and was Commander of Post 442. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and building guns and reloading. In moving to Wasilla in September he joined Post 35 and enjoyed talking with Veterans and meeting new friends.

Don’s family wrote, “Don’s love for his family, and his country made Don a role model to those who knew him. He lived his life for God and his country and fought the hardest battle which he suffered so, God called him home.”

He is survived by two sons, Michael (Angelina) Myers of Dillingham and Chris Carroll of Wasilla; three grandchildren, Jordan, Kaylene and Evan of Dillingham; one great grandson, Peter of Dillingham; two sisters, Jennifer Haire of Hastings, Michigan, and Rilda (Joe) Auxier; many nephews and nieces, two beloved sisters in law, Brenda Sue and Kim of Chesapeake, Ohio; and two brothers in law, Roy Heffner and Jeff Waugh of Chesapeake.
