Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Dorothy Jean Rosencrans passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 21, 2015, while vacationing in Arizona. She was born in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, on March 25, 1939, the daughter of Ralph and Edna Compton.
Dorothy and her husband, Herb, moved to Alaska in 1961.
Dorothy graduated from Rockingham Memorial Nursing School in Harrisonburg, Virginia, as a Registered Nurse, where she met Herb Rosencrans. They were married on Dec. 30, 1961, in Front Royal, Virginia.
Dorothy worked at the Doctor’s Clinic in Anchorage from 1962 to 1967. Dorothy helped run the family business (Herb’s Muldoon Texaco Anchorage) for 14 years. She and Herb were members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Anchorage.
In 1982, Herb and Dorothy built a home in the Valley and started up Knik Tire & Auto Service Station, which they owned for 30 years.
Dorothy was an active and supportive member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Wasilla. She was also a member of the Sleeping Lady Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Herb; daughter, LeAnn Buhler; son, Randal Rosencrans; and their spouses, Brian and LeAnn Opal; grandchildren, Herb Mansavage, Andy Rosencrans, Madeline Mansavage, Erik Rosencrans, David Ware and Audrey Rosencrans; sisters, Lucy Bishop and Caroline MaClam; and many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents, a sister, June, and brother, Pete Compton, and two grandchildren, Brianna Mansavage and Joseph Rosencrans.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 4, 2015, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Bogard Road in Wasilla. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Good Shepherd Kitchen Ministries fund, “Five Loaves, Two Fish Mission,” a program that feeds and cares for homeless teens.
