Dorothy S. DeMond, 74, formerly of Wasilla, passed away April 19, 2015, surrounded by her family after a brief illness.

Dorothy was born June 11,1940, to Raymond and Jean Suarez. She attended Cortland Central School and graduated from SUNY Cortland in 1962 with a teaching degree. Dottie married Bruce DeMond in June of 1962 before moving to Horseheads to start her first teaching job. In 1969 Dottie and Bruce moved to Alaska to raise their family. Dottie continued to teach for the Matanuska-Susitna School District until she retired from teaching math at Wasilla Jr. High in 1995. After retiring, she worked at the educational/emergency resource center helping the community.

When Dottie wasn’t teaching in the classroom she could be found creating personalized bunnies and home decor items under the name Dottie’s Delights. In her most recent crafting adventure, she set up a quilt shop with her oldest daughter, Betsy.

Dottie never passed on an opportunity to watch her grandkids play sports or put on “live theater performance”, not to mention the car adventures. Whether it was the Walmart that kept moving, or an uncooperative GPS, Gramma Dottie could always make it fun.

Surviving Dottie are her three daughters: Betsy (Louisiana), Amy (Alaska) and Lori (Washington), 12 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and siblings Tommy and Carl (Florida) and Kay (New York).

Preceding her in death were both her father and mother, brother Clarke, husband Bruce and only son, Robert.

The family invites you to join for a 1 p.m. graveside service on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at the Aurora Wasilla Cemetery (1096 North Wasilla-Fishhook Rd, Wasilla, AK 99654) with a continued celebration of Dottie’s life immediately following at the Iditarod Elementary School Library.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the CJD Foundation online at bit.ly/1bEFvCS or bit.ly/1GIxU3T.
