Longtime Palmer resident Earnest “Lon” Chaney, 86, died Dec. 3, 2010, at Michael’s Assisted Living Center in Palmer.

Earnest was born in Douglas County, Mo. He lived in Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and California. At an early age he left home to “ride the rails,” looking for work during the depression. He tried his hand at ranching, farming and construction, mastering many occupations and skills.

In 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy to fight in World War II. He remained in active duty through 1946, serving aboard the U.S.S. ABSD No. 1, a large floating dry-dock warship repair station. Earnest was honorably discharged as a Shipfitter 3rd Class, having received the Philippine Liberation and Victory medals.

He came to Alaska in 1952. He completed a nearly 40-year career with Local 302 Operating Engineers and was a master welder. He loved to sing and was a very gifted yodeler.

Earnest’s wife, Lorraine, preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Juanita Hall, of New Plymouth, Idaho; the lone surviving child from a family of eight children.

Military graveside services will be held in spring 2011 at Valley Memorial Gardens in Palmer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Palmer Senior Center. Valley Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
