Edgar (Ed) Johnson
Edgar (Ed) Johnson, 77, passed away peacefully on June 26th, 2022, in Palmer, AK after fighting cancer and multiple ailments for many years. His beloved wife of 58 years, Jodine (Jody), was by his side when he left this earth to be with the Lord.
Ed and Jody were married in 1964 and moved to Alaska in 1969; landing in Seldovia, AK and working as a bulldozer operator for a lumber camp. Through the years he’s worked on multiple highway construction projects, and spent over 25 years working on the North Slope building pads and ice roads.
Ed joined the Navy in 1966 and was selected for the “Seabees” where he received training to operate heavy equipment. He was honorably discharged after serving two tours in Vietnam. Ed loved the outdoors of Alaska. He spent much of his free time hunting, fishing, camping, ATV’ing, boating and all things outdoor related. He held a special place in his heart for the beautiful mountains where the Dall Sheep live. He considered sheep hunting to be his true vocation every fall. Ed was a phenomenal cook and enjoyed spending time perfecting his and his mother’s recipes. He loved feeding people and it was impossible to leave his house without a full belly. He was also a talented cribbage and pinochle player. He could not turn down an offer for a quick game. He really loved family time and would often play late into the evening. In his later years, Ed spent much of his time in his greenhouse relishing each opportunity to teach his grandson how to grow and manage various crops.
Ed was a gentle, giving, humble soul. He was compassionate and caring. He was especially selfless in regards to the needs and wants of his family.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, George and Orpha Wheeler, and his three sisters; Betty Corbera, Kitty Creasey, and Sharon Lambert. He is survived by his wife Jody; children Michael (Teresa), Sarah (Dan) and Daniel (Christine); sister Jean Norman; and his seven grandchildren.
Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 12:00pm on Friday July 8th, 2022, 1201 E. Bogard Rd., Wasilla, AK.
