Palmer resident Edna Georgina “Bunty” Beacom, 88, died Sept. 24, 2010, at home, with her family by her side.

A service is being held at 1 p.m. Oct. 2 at St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church in Palmer, with Father Dean Mandrell and Father Ralph Waganor officiating.

Edna was born March 6, 1922, in England. She graduated from high school and attended five years of training for nursing. She moved to Alaska in 1947.

Edna met her husband, George C. Beacom, in Nome, and they married in Sitka in March 1951. They lived there until 1976, when they moved to Palmer.

Edna worked as a nurse in Juneau, Nome and Sitka hospitals. She also worked as a nurse for the Alaska Lumber & Pulp Co. and at the Pioneers’ Home in Palmer until she retired in 1987. Edna was one of the first volunteers at Valley Hospital. She also volunteered at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center until 2009.

Edna was very active at St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church. She also enjoyed needlework, gardening and reading.

She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Beacom; son, Kurt Beacom; grandchildren, Aaron and Amanda Miyahira; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Kalii and Keith Miyahira, all of Palmer. She is also survived by her sister, Pamela Ward, of Croyden, England.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church.
