A memorial service and Rosary for Elizabeth “Betty” Margaret Meiwes, 79, was held Feb. 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Stan Allie officiating.
A funeral will be March 6 at 2 p.m., at St. Mary’s of the Valley Parish, 4440 SW 148th Ave., Beaverton, Ore., with burial to follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Roy, Ore.
Betty died peacefully on Feb. 4, at her Wasilla residence. She was born in Lincoln, Neb., to Joseph and Margaret Peters Vanderzanden on Dec. 3, 1930. She moved to Alaska in 2001 from Springfield, Ore., to live with her daughter.
While in Ore.,, she was strongly active with St. Alice’s Catholic Church. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wasilla. She joined TOPS 16 years ago, and was International Queen Runner up in 2009. Hobbies were reading, needlework, sewing and gardening. She will be remembered by all for her unfailing courage, faith and love of family and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad J. Meiwes and son, Richard J. Meiwes both from Springfield, Ore., and sister, Doris P. Meiwes of Reedsport, Ore.
She is survived by two children; James Meiwes of Gresham, Ore., and Patricia Meiwes of Wasilla, one sister; Sister Elizabeth Ann Vanderzanden of Beaverton, Ore., and one granddaughter; Christina Meiwes of Springfield, Ore., and many other friends and family members.
