Ellen Margaret Cummins Haynes passed away on November 11, 2020, in her daughter’s home in Palmer, Alaska.
She was born on February 8, 1929, in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated from Ohio State University with a BA in Home Economics. She married Edward James Haynes, Jr., in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, on June 7, 1953. They were married 54 years before her husband passed away.
They first moved to Alaska in 1959 with four children when her husband became the Manager of the Matanuska Dairy. They lived in Anchorage and Palmer and had two more children. After the 1964 earthquake, they moved to Vancouver, Washington. Ellen lived in Vancouver, Washington until 2017 when she moved back to Anchorage to live with her other daughter.
She raised six children as well as worked full-time. She was very artistic, enjoying gardening, sewing, crafts, and making cards. She was the organist at Columbia Presbyterian Church in Vancouver for over 25 years. Her faith was an inspiration to her family.
She is survived by her six children: David (wife Barb passed in 2019), Edward (Debbie), Leisa Carrick (Tim), John (Shelli), Donald (Marcelle), and Mary. She also has 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Her children and grandchildren will have a celebration of life service via Zoom on account of COVID-19.
