Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Elsa B. Akers, 69, died July 20, 2010, at her Palmer home, following a battle with cancer.
A celebration of her life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, July 31 at the Butte Fire Hall, followed by an all-day potluck.
Elsa was born Oct. 17, 1940, in Fort Collins, Colo. She came to Alaska in 1958 and resided in Palmer from 1958 to 1963, in Anchorage from 1963 to 1985, and again in Palmer from 1985 until the time of her death. She was a homemaker and a volunteer at Ptarmigan Elementary School from 1972 to 1974 and at Creekside Park Elementary School from 1967 to 1972.
She began working with the Butte Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary in 1991. Her special interests were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, various crafts and feeding firemen.
Survivors are her husband, Harold B. Akers; son, John Akers; daughter, Judy Mayfield; daughter-in-law, Michelle Akers; and son-in-law, Dennis Mayfield, all of Palmer; grandsons, Dennis Mayfield II of Anchorage and Matthew Akers of Palmer; granddaughters, Christa Mayfield, Kaitlyn and Kelsey Akers, and Elisabeth Mayfield, all of Palmer; great-granddaughters, Serenity and Aaliyah Mayfield-Roe of Anchorage; great-grandson, Alexander Mayfield of Anchorage; adoptive grandsons, Lars and Clancy Sheppard-Webber of Palmer; and brothers, Arnold J. Mason of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Stanley A. Mason of Anchorage.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lucille Mason, and brothers, Daris Mason, Ivan Mason and Ernest Mason.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of one’s choice.
