Longtime Alaskan, Elverda Emma Lincoln, passed away January 31, 2024 at age 100. Elverda was born in Glencoe, Minnesota on July 16, 1923. She was the eldest of 14 children.
She enlisted in the Navy during World War II in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946. During this time, she met a young Marine, Robert Lincoln, who came to her office daily to deliver and receive messages. They married on May 5, 1946 and looking for adventure drove the Alcan Highway in 1950 with a 3-year-old and one on the way. They settled in the Wasilla area and homesteaded on Fairview Loop where Snowshoe School is today and raised three children.
She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1973 at the age of 50 and has served in various capacities in the church for the last 50 years. She and her husband served four missions; to England, to St. George, Utah and two locally at the Church storehouse and cannery.
Elverda had many interests and hobbies. She has written three books: Udder Confusion, Alaska Animal Antics and Peeling the Peelings. She authored many stories featured frequently in posts by the Wasilla Senior Center. She enjoyed quilting; had a booth at the craft fairs around town; sewed quilts for the Childrens Place and was proud to help sew quilts for Veterans with the Quilts of Valor and to assist with the presentation of the quilts. She was known as the "Potholder Lady" for her patchwork potholders which were in high demand. She could be found at the community room in her building at the Wasilla Senior Center, where she lived for the past 23 years, working on a jigsaw puzzle or playing card games with friends. She remained active by participating in TaiChi classes, Bingocize and walking the halls of her apartment building past her 100th birthday. She loved to travel and did so into her 90s. She has been to all 50 states and many countries around the world.
Elverda enjoyed her 100th birthday celebration with a huge party attended by family and numerous friends. She commented many times since then that family and friends should get together when they are living and not wait until after they have passed away.
