Eunice Marie Johnson

Eunice Marie “Eunie” Johnson, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed at 94 in Daphne, Alabama, on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

Eunice was born in 1929 & raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating from Flippen High, Arkansas in 1947. She met and married Grover, following him to his Air Force posting in Alaska. They homesteaded 160 acres near Big Lake in 1952. During the summers of ‘53 to ’56 she lived with three toddlers in a one-room cabin without utilities, while Grover worked at Elmendorf and came home weekends and Wednesdays.

Once retired they spent summers at the homestead, traveling during the winter, a tradition she continued until she died.

Sharing her faith was a centerpiece of Eunice's later life, praying every day, making home visits and keeping contact via many handwritten letters.

Eunice was an avid and talented painter, enjoyed jigsaws, crossword puzzles and spending time her family. She is preceded in death by her husband Grover, son Robert, daughter Edith and grandson James.

Eunice’s sister Edna recalls “Eunie is 10 years older, our sister Edith 12 years. Dad worked nights and we were to keep quiet when he was home. My job as the youngest was to ask Dad if we could go to the movies (he rarely said no to me).

Eunice is survived by her sisters Edith Harley and Edna Spangler; three sons with their families: Grover (Elaine), grandson Stephen (Hunter), great-grandchildren Gavin, Logan, Maximus and Augustus; Robert’s daughter Jessica; David (Judith), grandchild Skye (Eric), great-grandchildren Deah and Lucan; Harry (Christie), grandchildren Edie, Joseph (Lynann), great-granddaughter Susan, and grandchildren Connor and Jacob.

A Memorial Service in Celebration of Eunice’s life will be held at 2pm, April 27th at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses at 1474 S Elizabeth Dr, Wasilla, Alaska.
