Palmer resident Evelyn Staub, 82, died Jan. 21, 2011, at Northern Comfort assisted living home in Wasilla.
Private family services will be held.
Evelyn was born Jan. 4, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., to Steve and Mathilda (Jednovicky) Avram.
She was foremost a mother who was always taking care of her family and siblings and worked hard as a homemaker.
Evelyn’s family said she braved the Alaska Highway to enjoy her life here in Alaska and be with her family. She moved to Alaska in 1997 and lived in Palmer, Houston and Wasilla. She loved to dine out, dress up and dance — especially a good polka. In recent years she enjoyed the Palmer Senior Center, where she will be missed by her friends she made there. Evelyn was especially close to her grandchildren Art and Michelle.
“We will always cherish the memories of her and carry her in our hearts,” her family said.
Evelyn is survived by daughters, Barbara (Martin) Shaw-Hadden of Palmer and Dorothy Marrs of Flossmore, Ill; sons, Andrew Shaw of Big Lake and Greg Shaw of San Clemente, Calif; grandson, Art (Kwang Cha Shin) Newman of Wasilla; and granddaughter, Michelle (Robert) Ulrich of Wasilla. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Brendon and Michelle Ulrich of Wasilla; sister, Demaris Mullin of Texas; brothers, Lee Avram of Texas, Jerry Avram of Arizona, and Clyde and Steve Abram of Illinois; and her best friend, Carol Hawkins of Alabama.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Gregory Shaw in 1995 and Robert Staub in 1974.
The family suggests memorials in her honor to the Palmer Senior Center, 831 S. Chugach St Palmer, AK 99645.
The family was cared for by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory Wasilla.
