Evila “Evelyn” Conrad, 88, passed away peacefully at Golden Agers Homecare in Wasilla, on July 25, 2014, surrounded by her family and loving caregivers.

Evila was born August 8, 1925, in Colombia and raised in Panama. She spent her childhood years with no schooling, caring for her only family member, her ailing grandmother. She met her husband on the beaches of Panama while he was stationed at Fort Kobe and said “it was love at first sight.” They married and lived in Panama for five years, then transferred to Governors Island, New York City. Military life gave Evila the opportunity to live in and travel all over Europe. The family settled in Staten Island, New York, where they raised three boys.

Evila was strong-willed with an independent spirit that helped her overcome many obstacles in her life. She taught herself how to read and write and bought her own little property in the Poconos, Pennsylvania. She was the happiest at Trails End in Pennsylvania, where her family spent many summers fishing, camping and enjoying the great outdoors.

She worked in housekeeping at Lily Pond Nursing Home and Willowbrook State School and retired from the state of New York in the 1980s. After her husband’s passing in 1993, she moved to sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida and stayed there until 2012, when she moved to Alaska due to her declining health to be close to her family until her passing.

Evila joyfully served as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses for more than 50 years. She found great joy in glorifying the word of Jehovah. She devoted her life to preaching the “Good News” and became a full-time pioneer. She is now resting faithfully in Jehovah’s loving memory awaiting the resurrection. Her family and friends, along with her brothers and sisters from her congregation will miss her dearly and cherish the time they had with her. Remembrances are being held at her various congregations.

On behalf of the Conrad family we wish to thank the staff at Golden Agers Homecare in Wasilla for the wonderful and compassionate care you gave our “Nana” during her stay at your facility.

Evila is survived by her three children, Frank (Celia) of Wasilla, Johnny (Stacey) of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and Drew (Lisa) of Staten Island, New York, as well as her eight grandchildren.

Her husband Gustave F. Conrad preceded her in death.

Cremation arrangements have been made with Legacy Funeral Homes in Wasilla.
