MAT-SU — Alaska Division of Forestry and Mat-Su Borough Department of Emergency Services Wildfire Mitigation program will offer free Firewise events May 3-5 in Big Lake, Palmer and Wasilla.
Firewise is a national program that helps homeowners reduce wildfire danger around their property. Events are:
• 6 p.m., May 3 at Faith Bible Church in Big Lake. Learn about the Big Lake Community Wildfire Prevention Plan and “Why Firewise? The Benefits of Becoming a Firewise Community.”
• 11 a.m., May 4 an open house is planned at the Division of Forestry Hangar, Palmer Airport Road. See firefighting aircraft, visit with Smokey Bear and eat fee hot dogs and soda. Learn what to do “Before the Smoke.”
• 2 p.m., May 5 at Mat-Su Central Fire Station, Lucille and Swanson streets in Wasilla. See firefighting equipment and enjoy refreshments. Learn why “Your Home Doesn’t Have to be a Wildfire Statistic.”
