WASILLA— The Food Bank of Alaska hosted a grand opening ceremony to celebrate its new facility Thursday, May 12.
Informational tables will be set up throughout the building, and light refreshments were served at the event. A short program featured selected donors, including leadership donor ConocoPhillips Alaska, who contributed to the capital campaign. The 2021 Hunger Action Heroes were also honored during the ceremony.
“We’ve seen it time and time again: Alaskans take care of each other,” Food Bank of Alaska Board President Amy DeBruhl stated in a recent press release. “This project is a significant investment in the future of our state, and we thank the community for standing with us and helping turn this goal into reality for their fellow Alaskans facing hunger – now and for the next generation.”
Based out of Anchorage, the Alaska Food Bank is the largest food bank in Alaska and serves communities across the state along with partner organizations that collect and distribute food in their service areas. They work with over 150 Alaskan agencies including pantries, meal programs, and youth programs.
According to the press release, the Alaska Food Bank distributed 11 million pounds of food which equates to 9.2 million meals in FY21, setting a record for the organization.
“Thanks to the tremendous generosity of Alaskans, we are fortunate to now be operating in our new facility which allows us the capacity and flexibility to meet the food needs of Alaskans,” Food Bank of Alaska CEO Jim Baldwin stated in the press release. “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate this success with our donors and members of the community who helped make this happen.”
