Gary Edward Brown, 88, passed away peacefully in his home in Ocean View, Hawaii, on January 3rd, 2023. Gary was born on January 31, 1934, in Bremerton, Washington. He grew up in the Seattle area and attended college at Central Washington University. After college, he entered the military (Army), and was stationed in Alaska where he worked in telecommunications on the White Alice system. After serving in the Army, he continued to work in Alaska and retired from the Neck Lake site in Palmer where he was a Teamster working for Alascom. Gary made his home on Wasilla Lake and lived there for more than 60 years. He was one of the original “Lake Rats'' that started the Wasilla Lake ice pool and was known for telling his colorful jokes. Gary became embedded in the community of the Mat-Su Valley and made many long-lasting friendships. He had many talents such as gardening, painting, woodworking and photography. After retirement, Gary spent the winter months at his house on the Big Island of Hawaii. He enjoyed nurturing his hundreds of trees, shrubs and flowers, as well as growing them for friends and neighbors. Gary was very social and will be deeply missed. Gary is preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his daughter, granddaughter, two sisters, nieces, nephews, and many friends that became his family.
