OBIT Van Dusen 12-22

Gary Mason Van Dusen, age 79, of Palmer, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017. Gary had been through so much in his life, but no matter what was thrown at him, he always remained positive and immediately went into “fight” mode. The diagnosis of bladder cancer was no exception. He told his doctor that he intended to fight the cancer and that he did. This diagnosis however, proved to be too much for him. Gary was a loving, kind, and generous man; everyone who met him loved him. He was born in Chehalis, Washington and moved to Salem, Oregon at an early age. In 2006, Gary relocated to Palmer, Alaska to be closer to his son Eric and his family. He and his son operated E & G Gunsmithing for 8 years. Gary was formerly employed by ODOT, the State of Oregon Department of Transportation, as a Photogrammetrist, a profession that he was incredibly proud of and a career that he seemed to define himself by, hence his former answering machine message, “you’ve reached G.M. Van Dusen, retired Photogrammetrist.” Gary proudly served his country with the Oregon National Guard for 22 years, retiring as SFC in 1988. He was a volunteer firefighter with Marion County 1 for over 15 years, with the rank of Captain. Surviving are his son Eric (Trish) Van Dusen, Palmer, AK, son Jeff Carlson, Salem, OR, grandchildren Tiffany (James) McCrum, Tawnee (Evan) Holden, Alexie (Nick) Cox, Eric M. (Demii) Van Dusen, Daniel Van Dusen, furry granddaughter Mazey, sister Carole Weston, numerous great-grandchildren, loving nieces, cousins and long-time friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joannie Ciapponi and great-grandson Zachary, son of Tiffany and James.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at the Butte Fire Station on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at 2 p.m. with light refreshments. The family requests that if you so desire, come prepared to share a story about Gary or words of encouragement. There will be a second service with full Military Honors at Oregon’s Willamette National Cemetery in the spring for his family and friends in the lower 48. Details will be posted closer to that date. The family wishes to thank those who extended their love and concern during this very difficult time. Memorial donations may be made to Mat-Su Senior Services, 1132 S. Chugach Street, Palmer, Alaska 99645.
