Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Geneva Kelsey Baker, 60, died Aug. 31, 2007, of natural causes at home in Wasilla.
Baker was born Jan. 19, 1947, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Otto and Lillian Schendel. She was a longtime Alaska resident, first coming here in 1973.
Baker is survived by children John Heck of Appomattox, Va., Roberta Adams of Wasilla, Melanie Kelsey of Graham, N.C., and Russell Kelsey of Wasilla. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, though she was known as Grandma Baker to many more.
Baker was an active longtime member of the Wasilla Lions clubs and volunteered for the Salvation Army, occasionally hitchhiking to ring the bell at Fred Meyer. She was always giving her time to others.
She loved going camping and spending time outdoors. She also loved her family and a long list of close friends; she will truly be missed by all who knew her.
A viewing will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 7 at Valley Funeral Home and Crematory, 151 E. Herning Ave. in Wasilla. Services will follow beginning at 2 p.m., with a celebration of life at Wonderland Park immediately afterward.
