George Edmund Zieger

George Edmund Zieger, 92.5, expired in his sleep on April 24, 2017. George was born in Velva, North Dakota, on July 10, 1924, to parents Elmer and Marion Zieger. George’s family was able to gather together just hours before his passing. George moved to Alaska in July of 1948 with his loving wife Althea, just two weeks after they married. George worked for the United States Postal Service for 30-plus years. He always had a second job, working to support the family. He and Althea had four children and fostered many young children that came into Anchorage for medical treatment from the villages of Alaska. George and Althea moved to Wasilla after he retired in 1986. George became a chicken farmer in 2007, after Althea passed away. He had as many as 350 chickens that he cared for on a daily basis, carrying food and water to them several times each day. George had recently had many medical crises, but was rehabilitating quite well. Unfortunately, he couldn’t tackle bladder cancer in the end!

George was preceded in death by his son, Gary A. Zieger, and wife, Althea M. Zieger, as well as his parents, Elmer Zieger and Marion Weber.

George is survived by his son, Rick (Ann) Zieger of Lamoni, Iowa; daughter, Nancy McManus of Wasilla; and son, Rod Zieger of Anchorage. Five grandchildren, Lacey Zieger of Des Moines, Iowa; Richard (Melody) McManus of Birmingham, Alabama; Drew Zieger (Kelsey) of Bettendorf, Iowa; Michael (Amy) McManus of Ozark, Alabama; and Kristen (Ray) Clarke of Keota, Iowa. Five great-grandchildren: Aidan, Charlie, Keegan, Blaine and Riley. At his request, there will be no services and please do not send flowers. The family requests memorial donations be sent to Hospice of Mat-Su.
