Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Longtime Anchorage resident George Edward Halverson, 72, died July 11, 2012, from lung cancer at his home in Anchorage.
A trucker’s celebration of life is 3 p.m., July 22 at Al’s Alaska Inn, 7830 Old Seward Hwy., Anchorage.
George was born March 19, 1940, to Adolph and Clara May (Bruun) Halverson in Buzzle Township, Beltrami County, Minn. He began his career in logging and trucking in Minnesota. In 1981, he moved to Anchorage and had owned and operated Halverson and Sons Trucking until he retired in 2006 after 40 years of trucking. George enjoyed shooting the breeze.
His family wrote: “George was a loving father and husband who cherished time with family and friends. He was quick with a practical joke and made everybody smile and laugh.”
Preceding him in death were his parents; former spouse, JoAnne Halverson; and brothers, Leroy and Duane Halverson.
Surviving are his wife, Marian Halverson of Anchorage; son, Kevin Halverson of Wasilla; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Marie Halverson of Wasilla; stepson, Brandon Bentz of Spokane, Wash.; grandsons, Christopher, Brandon, Kevin and Kenny Halverson of Wasilla; granddaughters, Jennifer Church of Wasilla and Kaylyn Hamp of Anchorage; great-grandchildren, Leila, Whalen, Lyric and Aliyah Halverson; sisters, Charlotte Coyle and Adeline Lien of Bagley, Minn., Elaine Hanson, Jeannie Jacobsen of Bemidji, Minn., and Helen Coyle of Shevlin, Minn.; brothers, Fred and Garald Halverson of Shevlin, Minn., Arlan Halverson of Colorado, and Larry and Gary Halverson of Pinewood, Minn.
