Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Longtime Alaska resident, George W. Chapman, 82, died May 7 at Alaska Veterans and Pioneers Home in Palmer.
Mr. Chapman was born on March 28, 1927, in Dillard, Mo., to Miles Thomas and Bertie Ozella (Ryder) Chapman. Mr. Chapman served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Following the war he made his way to Alaska in 1946. On the ship to Alaska, he met his wife, Betty of 50 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Chapman built their dream, Matanuska Air Service in Palmer, which they later moved to Wasilla (Anderson Lake) where it is still in operation. Mr. Chapman was a flight instructor, commercial pilot, aircraft mechanic, and so much more. He touched so many lives and taught many Alaskans to fly, always wore a smile and always had a story. Mr. Chapman was such a wonderful person, loving husband and father, and great friend to so many.
He will be remembered and greatly missed by all.
Mr. Chapman is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Grant W. and Debby Chapman and his granddaughter, Jessica Chapman all of Wasilla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Bertie Chapman; son, Greg W. Chapman; wife, Betty Chapman; sister, Ruth Appleton; and brother, Travis Chapman.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Mr. Chapman at Matanuska Air Service, 3210 N. Travelair Dr., Wasilla, on , June 6, 2009 at noon.
Family extends sincere appreciation for the great care and kindness given by the staff at the Alaska Veterans and Pioneer’s Home.
Arrangements for the family were made by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory in Wasilla.
