Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Gladys Kolberg, 71, died surrounded by her family at home on Sept. 4, 2007, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Sept. 21, 1935, in Florence, Wis., to the late Rudolf and Stella (Stabinski) Johnson. She married Henry Kolberg on July 11, 1953, in Florence. Her husband died in 1997.
Kolberg graduated from Florence High School in the class of 1953. In 1962, she and her husband moved to Palmer. After 10 years they moved back to Florence, living there until 1979 when they moved to Florida. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Englewood, Fla., and enjoyed traveling and visiting with her children and grandchildren in the summer months.
She is survived by sons, Mere (Karen) Kolberg of McCormick, S.C., and Glenn (Pam) Kolberg of Palmer; daughters Julie (Mike) McLain of Palmer, Connie (Tom) Rowe of St. Cloud, Minn,, and April (Glenn) Harmon of Englewood, Fla.; brothers Phillip (Darcey) Johnson, Jack (Alice) Johnson and Donald Johnson; sisters Vivian (Alfred) Karle, Miriam (Donald) Vasser and Nancy (Joe) Podnar, all of Florence, Wis.; grandchildren Conrad Kolberg, Halsey Sleeter, Chad Kolberg, Tara Johnson, Molly McLain, Audrey Rowe and Amy Rowe; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Sept. 8 at St. John Lutheran Church in Florence, Wis. Burial was at Commonwealth Cemetery. Friends may leave condolences to her family online at www.jacobsfuneralhomes.com.
