Global Work Party and learning fair is Oct. 10

PALMER — The Earth Care Presbyterians of the Presbytery of Yukon is sponsoring a learning fair at the United Protestant Church from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 10, at 713 S. Denali St.

The Rev. Israel Nelson said the event will share ways to reduce humanity’s carbon footprint. The focus is on the need to reduce carbon emissions from 390 to 350 parts per million, he said.

“It will include information about what people can do to reduce their carbon footprint,” Nelson said. “The idea is to come by and learn what you can do.”

But why is the United Protestant Church concerned about carbon emissions?

“Basically, we’ve been mandated to take care of Mother Earth,” Nelson said. “Humans are especially commissioned by God to care for God’s creation.”

The need to reduce carbon emissions is based on the research of Dr. James Hansen of NASA, which indicates “the maximum concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide life on our planet can tolerate is 350 parts per million,” according to a press release about the event.

Nelson said the learning fair includes informational booths for the Valley Community for Recycling Solutions Center and Renewable Energy Systems, an Anchorage business.
