Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Guy Hurbert Greene, Jr., 83, died peacefully at home on Oct. 23, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was born May 24, 1927, in Bay City, Mich., to Guy H. Sr. and Hazel (Fetter) Greene.
Guy joined the U.S. Navy on July 1945. He served on the USS New Mexico. In 1951 he graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s of science degree in Civil Engineering. Guy was a member of the Mason Alpena Lodge. As a civil engineer, he worked in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Alaska. In 1961 after receiving a friend’s letter, Guy moved his family to Alaska. He worked for Alaska Department of Highways for 20 years.
While in Juneau, Guy became involved with amateur ham radio KL7GHB. Guy completed a dream when he sailed his ketch Kaisa from Poulsbro, Wash., to Whittier. While living in Palmer, Guy enjoyed photographing wildlife and mountains, driving his 1952 Ford tractor, visiting his horse Ava, playing with his dogs Fluffy, Lady and Skye, and caring for his apple trees.
Guy was preceded in death by his sister, Emily Carvey. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia of Wasilla; his brother Rolland Greene of Bay City, Mich.; two daughters and son-in-laws, K.T. and Eric Pyne of Fairbanks and Janet and Doug Burts of Okanogan, Wash.; daughter and companion, Joanna Greene and Rick Harding of Eagle River; daughter Kristine Greene of Anchorage. He was a loving grandpa to his grandchildren Spencer Alvarez; Kodi Erickson Greene; Aubrey, Evva and Ian Burts and great-grandchild Kaden Greene.

Memorial service is at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 7, at Alaska Heritage Memorial Chapel in Wasilla with Chaplain Susan Knight of Hospice of Mat-Su Officiating. A graveside service is at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Fort Richardson National Cemetery with full military honors. Those attending need to be at the Fort Richardson main gate by 12:40 p.m. to be escorted by the MP’s to the National Cemetery.
