Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Harriette Townshend Viets, 94, long time resident of Wasilla, cherished mother and grandmother, passed on peacefully Oct. 8, 2017, at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer, Alaska, with her family by her side.
Harriette was born Jan. 15, 1923, and raised in the family home in Brandywine, Maryland, the eighth of 12 children to Samuel Gilbert Townshend, Jr. and Laura Smith Townshend.
On July 9, 1948 in Titusville, Florida, Harriette and Ronald Lamont Viets were married. Harriette and Ron had three children, Ronnie, Carolyn, and Laura. She was a devoted mother and homemaker. Harriette was a very friendly, kind and generous lady who would always step up to help someone in need. Harriette enjoyed bowling, playing scrabble (she was an extraordinary speller) and card games and she was practically unbeatable at all of them!
Harriette is survived by her daughters Carolyn Johnson (Troy Franklin) Wasilla, Alaska; Laura Amacher (Robert) of Wasilla, Alaska; her grandchildren Zandra McLendon (Greg) of New York; Tiffany Smith (Daniel) of Mobile, Alabama; Christina Giuliano (Joey) of Roanoke, Virginia; Amanda Amacher of Wasilla, Alaska; her great-grandchildren Zane and Rhys McLendon; and Lillian Giuliano; and many precious nieces and nephews and other relatives mostly back east.
Harriette was preceded in death by her parents, 11 siblings; husband; and son Ronald Carl Viets.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date and the family plans to take her back to Maryland for her final resting place to be near her beloved family.
