The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) today said that N. Palmer-Fishhook Road. (Hatcher Pass Rd.) is closed from Santa Fe Cir to Fishhook Trailhead, including MP 14, near the Gold Mint Parking Lot, as a preventative measure for the potential for a natural avalanche to impact the open road. The decision is based off the weather forecast and snowpack structure.
The closure extends to snow machine trails that run from Gold Mint to Fishhook, as they are also in the avalanche danger path. Hatcher Pass Lodge is also closed until further notice.
A look at the camera at Hatcher Pass MP 15, available at 511.alaska.gov, shows recent snow activity.
Officials say that conditions will be reassessed daily but expect the closure to last at least through the weekend.
Updates will be posted on the 511 system. Visit www.511.alaska.gov for more information.
