Mrs. Hazel May (Bunnell) Daggett, 93, died at home with her family March 31 in Big Lake. Hazel was born May 26, 1915 in Tangent, Ore., to Clarence and Lilly (Ace) Bunnell.
Hazel was a woman who loved to dream and in her dream she saw herself living in Alaska. Before this dream would be realized, she lived a whole life which was devoted to her family. She raised her three sons and later took on a second family and raised them like her own as well. Hazel followed her first husband from logging camp to logging camp, living in dirt floor tents in Eastern Oregon. She would turn each of these accommodations into a home for her family. Hazel was active for many years in the Rebecca’s in Alsea, Ore. She was an excellent seamstress, but as she had three sons, she became an avid hunter and would take them out mule deer hunting. It was not uncommon for Hazel to be the only one on the hunt to get her deer. As well, she believed in retail therapy, but with a twist, she would often return the items that she had purchased the next day.
Four years ago, Hazel fulfilled her dream of moving to Alaska and came up from Redmond, Ore., to Big Lake to reside with her son. She never tired of seeing the moose and other wildlife she saw when outside. At the age of 92 she was able to enjoy a flight around Denali. Hazel was involved in life and the world around her.
She loved to garden and would grow flowers, apparently Hazel had a wonderful ability to nurture her garden and flowers.
Mrs. Hazel May Dagget was survived by her children Rodney Follett, Chuck Follett, Lynn Follett as well, Jeff, Richard, Bob, Kim , Julie and Elaine, as well numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Lilly Bunnell, brother Howard, sister Tootsie, brothers Percy and Clarence “Bus.”
A Celebration of Hazel’s life will be held by the family at a later day.
In Lieu of flowers, the family of Mrs. Hazel Daggett suggest donations be made to the Mat-Su Home Care and Hospice, 950 E. Bogard Rd. Ste. 132, Wasilla, AK 99654.
