Helen Dorothy Maslyk, known as Dorothy or “Dot”, 91, passed on March 10, 2024 in Wasilla, Alaska from natural causes in her home surrounded by family. She was a daughter of Henry W. and Helen Krynock Kraner. Born on January 7, 1933 in Braddock, PA, she lived with her family in PA until after her graduation from Shenago High School.

Dot was married to Walter “Walt” Maslyk Sr. in 1951 and moved to Anchorage, Alaska. Shortly after when he was drafted to the US Army and stationed Fort Richardson. Their first house was on Peck Ave in Anchorage, but built their permanent home in Peters Creek, Alaska where they lived until Walt’s retirement from the Civil Service. They moved to New Castle, PA in 1977 where they lived until after her husband’s death in 1981. She moved back to Alaska in 1990 to be close to her children and lived in Wasilla, AK until her passing.

Dorothy was a loving mother, wife and dedicated Roman Catholic. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Wasilla, St. Andrew’s Catholic Church of Eagle River and a member of the Legion of Mary. She raised five children in the wilds of Alaska and enjoyed gardening, planting flowers and spending time with family, friends and especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed volunteering her time to many organizations including the Church and the Food Pantry of Wasilla. She loved bowling and was an avid bowler on a senior bowling league.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Maslyk Sr; son, Michael H. Maslyk; birth parents, Henry W and Helen Krynock Kraner; stepmother, Bertha Kraner; sisters, Anna M. Lippmann & Elaine Kraner; brothers, Henry Kraner, William Kraner, Alex Kraner & Steve Dmetruk.

Dorothy is survived by four of her children, Walter Maslyk Jr. & wife Deborah Maslyk of Escondido, CA, Jefferey Maslyk Sr of Wasilla, AK, Mary Shampine & husband Alvin Shampine of Wasilla, AK, Pamela Maslyk & husband Toshihide Hamazaki of Anchorage, AK. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm on Wednesday, March 20th 2024 at the Legacy Funeral Home located at 1015 S Check St, Wasilla, AK. A Catholic funeral mass will be held on Thursday, March 21st at noon at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church located at 1201 E Bogard Rd, Wasilla AK and directly followed by a reception. Dorothy will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
