Herbert “Herb” C. Fassler, 57, died Feb. 26, 2012, at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.
A celebration of life dinner is planned April 28 at the Tazlina Hall in Glennallen.
Herb was born in Palmer, but raised at Gunsight Mountain Lodge. He spent most of his life in Alaska, where he traveled and explored many hunting and fishing grounds. Herb despised “city” life. He would rather be sitting around a campfire telling stories and jokes in the middle of the woods.
He had a plethora of jobs. Herb was mechanically talented and could work on automobiles, planes, heavy machinery and boats. His sense of humor was unforgettable. His goal during conversations was to put a smile on the other person’s face, and he certainly did. He had a big heart and willingness to help anyone.
He had two children, Herbert “Sonny” L. Fassler and Rochelle Fassler, whom he loved dearly. His last months were spent in Anchorage near his children and with ongoing support from his sister, Mechele Fassler, and girlfriend, Lorena Olson.
The prayer, “Lord, I am walking your way let me in, for my feet are sore and my clothes are ragged. Look at my years, Lord, and my sins will play out like on a screen. Read them off, forgive what you can. Then send me on my path, I will walk till you bid me a rest,” was handwritten on his wall.
His family wrote, “Herb specifically wanted to be remembered for his love of the great outdoors. He also wanted us all to “relax and see ya a lil’ farther up the trail!”
Surviving are his son, Herbert “Sonny” L Fassler; daughter, Rochelle Fassler; sisters, Mechele Fassler and Anita Jette; brothers, John and Garret Fassler; step-mother, Ruth Fassler; girlfriend, Lorena Olson; aunt and uncles, Mae and Robert Marshall and Johnnie Goodlataw; cousins, David Goodlataw, Janice Goodlataw, and Nate and Josh Goodlataw; and many more relatives and good friends.
Preceding him in death were his father, Herbert F Fassler; mother, Mabel (Goodlataw) Fassler; aunt, Irene Goodlataw; cousin, Norma Finch; and uncle, Lewis Goodlataw.
Arrangements were entrusted to Alaska Cook Inlet Funeral Services. An online guest book may be signed at cookinletfuneralhome.com.
