Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Homer Jay Thacker, 97, passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at the Virginia Mountain Home Community Living Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. Homer was born April 13, 1920, in Kenova, West Virginia.
He joined the Army and served in WWII under Patton’s 3rd Army in the 556 Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Tank Company. He went on to own Thacker’s Variety Store with his brother in Kenova and Tri-State Asphalt Sealing. From there he retired living with his family and moving around together to Florida, Texas, Alaska and finally to Tennessee. He is a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the DAV.
He is a Christian with strong faith and love. He will be remembered as being patriotic and a friend to all. He is the former president of the Huntington Rose Society and the CK Business Men’s Association, and a former volunteer with the Fire Department, Civil Defense, and organizer of WV largest Christmas parade. If you knew Homer, you were his buddy.
He is preceded in death by his parents (Sarah and John Thacker), brother (Paul and Elizabeth Thacker), wife (Lea Thacker), grandson (Stephen Thacker), great-granddaughter (Breanna Matthews). He is survived by his son (Ken and Nancy Thacker), granddaughter (Julie and Ben Alexander), great-grandchildren (Cassandra, Brandon and Jack Alexander); nephew, Johnny Thacker.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Jeffers Funeral in Greeneville with a Masonic service, with Chaplin Kevin Holmes officiating. A military graveside service will follow at the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery.
