Long time Alaskan resident, Howard R. Nugent II (Howdie), 79, passed away August 3rd, 2023, in Whittier, Alaska. He was born June 4, 1944, to Howard R. Nugent and Helen Fulton Nugent in Bad Axe, Michigan. He grew up working hard on the family dairy farm with his six siblings. After graduating high school, he went to college at Eastern Michigan University, where he met his future wife, Annette Gerlach. They were married May 24, 1968, in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Shortly after, they headed to Alaska in search of adventure and opportunity and ultimately settled in and started a family. Howdie owned and operated several successful businesses over the years, mainly specializing in construction and land development. He was well known in the community as an honest hard worker who was happy to help solve any problem that was brought his way. He valued his family time the most, but thoroughly enjoyed Alaska’s outdoors and spent his life fishing, hunting, flying, and boating. He was always up for an adventure, and when someone needed help, Howdie was the first one there. Howdie lived a good life and will be missed by many.
Howdie is survived by his wife, Annette Gerlach Nugent, his sons Todd (Janelle) Nugent and Chad (Jenny) Nugent, his daughter-in-law, Catherine Nugent, and his grandchildren, Catrina Nugent, Adriana Nugent, Wesley Nugent, Rylee Nugent, Devin Nugent, and Claudia Nugent, as well as all his siblings; Nancy Denbrock, Gary Nugent, Jan Nugent, Nicki (Steve) Williams, Patti (Michael) Grenko, and Clark (Bev) Nugent and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his oldest son Howard R. Nugent III and his parents. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Howdie’s kindness by helping others or donating to your favorite charity. A celebration of life will take place at a future date.
