Iditarod partners with Army for 2024 race

The Iditarod recently announced that the U.S. Army has joined them as a partner for the 52nd running of The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Iditarod officials expressed excitement over the partnership.

“The Iditarod looks to the Army for lessons on how to manage our complicated supply chain and prepare for all contingencies. Moreover, many of our volunteers and mushers have served, and in particular, the Iditarod’s founder Joe Redington Sr., served in the Army and fought in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, we are very proud of this partnership,” Iditarod CEO Rob Urbach stated in the press release.

U.S. Army Recruiting Marketing and Engagement Brigade Commander Col. Karen Rutka was born and raised in Fairbanks. She has fond memories of watching the Iditarod race and he's excited to return to Alaska to see the race start in person.

“The participants and their sled dog teams face the challenges of the Iditarod race with resilience, determination, and teamwork, which are traits very much reflective of the characteristics found in the U.S. Army Soldier,” Rutka stated in the press release. “The partnership between the Army and the Iditarod not only celebrates our shared spirit but also reaffirms our commitment to the people of the great state of Alaska."

The 2024 Iditarod Ceremonial Start starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2 in downtown Anchorage. The official Iditarod Restart starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3 at the Willow Community Center. Army representatives will be onsite greeting visitors and providing information about their various programs.

Iditarod fans are encouraged to watch the race unfold to support the sponsors, the history, culture and cheer for the teams as they embark on their long journey to Nome.
