Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Jack L. Welsh, 74, passed away at his home on Oct. 12. He was born in Hutchinson, Kan., Oct. 14, 1934, the son of Layton and Addie (Cook) Welsh. Jack graduated from El Dorado High School. In 1964 he moved to Anchorage and in 1966 she was joined by his wife Peggy and together they owned and operated First Street Autobody. Through the years they enjoyed their weekend get-a-ways to their cabin on Prator Lake. Jack loved carpentry and building and in 2000 they retired to the home he built at the lake. Jack also loved to tease his family. Their home was always filled with laughter. He was very involved in his wife’s musical endeavors and with his home recording equipment he recorded and produced many CD’s. Jack also dedicated time to helping at the food bank at his church in Anchorage.
Jack is survived by his wife of over 41 years, Peggy; son, Layton and his family, three grandsons, two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren; son Gregg and his wife Suzan and their family, one grandson, one granddaughter and four great-grandchildren; daughter Donna Thompson and her husband Ric and their family, three grandsons, one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren; son, Jackie and his wife Cindy and their family, one grandson and one granddaughter; daughter, Anita St. John and her husband Larry; son, Jeffery Merrifield and his family, one son; sister, Marilyn Rogers of Oletha, Colo.; brother-in-law, Keith Barnes and his wife Mary of Oak Grove, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Ardith Chadwick, Eloise Johnson and Virgina Brown. He was predeceased by his parents.
Jack’s life will be celebrated at 3 p.m., today at the Family Christian Center, 203 W. Dogwood Ave. Palmer, AK 99645 with the Rev. Peter Gallardo officiating.
Arrangements were with Valley Funeral Home and Crematory.
