Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Jack Thor West, 63, died of a heart attack Nov. 23, 2011, at his mother’s home in Palmer.
Jack was born Oct. 29, 1948, in Fort Lewis, Wash. He came to Alaska in 1950. He lived in Sitka, Juneau, Fairbanks, Valdez and Palmer.
Jack graduated from high school in 1967 in Juneau, and he also served in the U.S. Army. He received his associate’s degree in refrigeration and heating from Mat-Su College. In the 1980s, he was an electrical contractor, owning and operating West Electric and Trident Electric. In the 1990s, he was an electrician and a member of the IBEW until he retired.
He donated to Habitat for Humanity.
Jack liked building things. He built his own home and projects like a hovercraft. He also held a private pilot’s license. Jack was always helpful, generous and there for you. He will be deeply missed.
Surviving are his mother, Esther B. West; brother, Bill West and Holly of California; sister R’Dell and Lonnie Wolf of Wasilla; sister, R’Nita and John Rogers of Wasilla; and many nieces, nephews and cousins in California, Washington, Idaho and Alaska.
Services were Dec. 2 at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery where he was buried near his son.
