James (Jim) P. Edgerton, 85, of Duncan, Arizona, passed away peacefully Nov. 12, 2014.
A memorial service to celebrate his life is Nov. 21 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Duncan, Arizona.
Jim was born in New York. He served in the Marines in World War II. He married Janet Moranz in 1952 in Greece, New York, while serving his country in the military. Jim was assigned to Alaska, which meant his new wife could join him. They continued their adventure in Alaska after his discharge and homesteaded on Edgerton Parks road in Palmer from 1958-1967. Ranching was their passion and the Lower 48 provided a more practical environment so they moved to Utah in 1967. Thus was the start of the lifestyle that Jim and Janet enjoyed for many years in Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. Together they would buy land, build a home, develop a ranch and then sell to move to the next challenge. Jim loved cattle ranching and refused to use an ATV on his ranch. Only a horse was acceptable to a man who lived for the peacefulness of riding the open range. Jim was involved in many rodeo events and associations over the years. He was an Arizona Ranger and started the Coronado Co. in Greenlee/Graham counties in 2001. Jim also acquired his pilot’s license at the age of 50 and owned several airplanes. His family and friends will miss his generous spirit, easy laugh and sense of humor.
“Good Bye Ol’ Cowboy….we’re sure gonna miss you,” his family said.
Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jan of Duncan, Arizona; sons, Judd (Gail) and Jesse (Kathleen) Edgerton of Palmer; three grandchildren, Diana, Derek and David; six great grandchildren; and sisters, Pat and Vera.
Preceding him in death was his brother, Ron Edgerton.
