Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

James (Jim) Paul Swing, 80, passed away on July 6, 2018 surrounded by family at St. Elias Hospital in Anchorage. Jim was born on April 7, 1938 in Rensselaer, Indiana to Paul and Goldie Swing, graduating from Rensselaer High School (1956) and Purdue University (1960) with a Civil Engineering degree. He enlisted in the Army during Vietnam and then came to Alaska to work on the roads in 1965 for a year. He married Margaret Nelson in 1968 and moved his new family to Alaska in 1972 to eventually become Public Works Director for the Municipality of Anchorage and raised his children in the Turnagain-by-the-sea neighborhood. He was Senior Engineer on Anchorage’s Waste Water Treatment Plant, his most notable achievement. In 1991, he married Joanne Lamb and moved to Palmer in 1993 to become Public Works Director for the Mat-Su Borough, retiring in 2003. He is survived by his children, Patricia Uri, Jennifer Falck, Sean Swing, and Amy Jo (Colleen) Swing, Mathew (Stacey) Huck, and Robert Huck, his niece and nephews, and many grandchildren, He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Don, and his true love Joanne. The family will hold a private memorial service and asks for donations to Jim’s favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in lieu of flowers
