JAMES MOREFIELD

James Morefield passed away March 15, 2008, at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center after a brief but valiant fight against liver cancer. He was 61.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. March 29 at the Methodist Church in Willow, Mile 67.5 Parks Highway. There will be a color guard service and potluck.

Morefield was born in Ohio Nov. 16, 1946. He was raised on a farm and enlisted in the U.S. Army straight out of school. He spent 13 months in Vietnam, where he claimed he got the biggest education of his life.

Morefield married soon after returning from the war and became the proud father of a wonderful baby boy. He and his bride left Ohio with a new truck and travel trailer bound for the Last Frontier. He lived in Juneau and enrolled in college there, where he studied art and design for two years. After his wife and son returned to Seattle to live, he moved to Anchorage.

Morefield lived in Anchorage and worked for Carvings by Wes for 10 years, becoming an accomplished antler carver, until 2002 when he moved to Willow and raised his beloved dogs. He loved the outdoors and wilderness that Alaska offered. He loved to camp and was happiest with a fishing pole in his hands. He also enjoyed bingo and playing pull tabs any chance he could. He collected Harley Davidson and NASCAR cards.

Morefield was a devoted and loyal friend to anyone who needed him and he will be missed by all. He is survived by his son, James Morefield II; grandson, James Morefield III; brother, Wesley Lancaster; his canine children, Crystal, Opal, Dozer and Rusty; and more friends than can be listed here.
