James R. McDowell

James R. McDowell

James “Jimmy” R. McDowell, 35, of Palmer, passed away March 16, 2010.

A service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 440 E. Elmwood in Palmer. Pastor J. Rockey will officiate.

James was born May 4, 1974, in Boise, Idaho, to Richard McDowell and Maggie Erickson. He graduated from high school in Idaho Falls, where he played the drums, participated in ballroom dancing and was a top cross-country runner. He was also a Seminary graduate.

During this time, James enjoyed his time as an Eagle Scout and a member of the Cedar Badge Staff at Treasure Mountain Scout Camp. James furthered his education at the University of Idaho, where he earned a degree in education and was deservedly awarded “Freshman of the Year.” James remained a loyal Vandal, despite the ribbing he received from his Bronco side of the family in Boise. He later received his master’s degree in education from the University of Alaska Anchorage. A career in public education naturally followed James’ education, where he worked as a teacher, technology coordinator and administrator in the Alaska education system. At the time of his passing, James was the production manager at the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman.

James was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. Those who knew him loved him, and he touched the lives of more than he knew. His time here was far too short, and he will be remembered.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa McDowell; parents, Richard McDowell of Garden Valley, Idaho, and Maggie Erickson of Kimberly, Idaho; step-father, Robert Erickson; step-mother, Jan McDowell; son, Alex and daughter, Kimberly Jean; grandmother, Velma McDowell; brother, Nathan (Jessica) Erickson; sisters, Mary (Kent) Bowman, Georgia (Eric) Arnold and Whitney Erickson; step-brothers, Dennis (Stacey) Chesnut and Chris (Erin) Chesnut; and step-sister, Heidi (John) Mordoff.

Honorary pallbearers will be Alex McDowell, Nathan Erickson, Dennis Chesnut, Chris Chesnut, Eric Arnold, Kent Bowman, Thomas Finch Jr., and Mohammod Heremi.

In lieu of flowers, and in James’ memory, lend your support to public schools.
