James Joseph “Jimmie Joe” Woods left this world June 22, 2008. His family was blessed to be by his side.
Woods was born in upstate Michigan Oct. 11, 1930, and was extremely proud to have served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Korean War. He moved with his family to Alaska in 1961, where his spirit will forever remain.
Woods retired after years surveying in the Alaska wilderness and in his later years became the author of three books reflecting his love of Alaska, his struggles with his experience of war and finally, the love he held for his children and family, his friends and living in the “Last Frontier.” His family believes the happiest times of his life were when he was fishing the wild waters of Alaska.
Woods passed his love of the outdoors to many who worked with him, fished with him and loved him, and especially to each of his surviving children: Denise Woods of Bellingham, Wash., Michael Woods of Anchorage, Cathie Woods of Eagle River, Tammie Mitchell of Palmer, Kimberly Woods of Bellingham, Wash., Cynthia Brewington of Eagle River, Patti Woods of Las Vegas, Nev., and Cy St. Amand, son of his heart, of Homer. He is also survived by grandchildren, Adam, Jim, Josh, Jeremiah, Jacob, Benjamin, Shawn Christopher, K’Dee, David, Devin, Dustin, Jessica, Frankie, Laura, Jessica, Samantha, Christina, Melissa, Daniel, Kali and Nicholas; and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Erin, Haley, Tracy, Kyle, Emma, Alexander, Deanna, Sophia, Jadyn and Lola. He was preceded in death by his son, James Joseph Woods Jr.
The family said, “Although there are many who have been loved, there is no one who has been loved more.”
A service will be held commemorating and celebrating Woods’ life at 2 p.m. July 13 at Hatcher Pass, where his ashes will be forever joined with the waters of Alaska. All who loved him are welcome to participate and are asked to contact Cynthia Brewington at cindisu44@Xahoo.com or Tammie Mitchellecran@-mtaonline.net for details.
