Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Janice Molly Smith, 83, died May 9, 2008 at home with her family in Meadow Lakes due to old age. The family will celebrate her life with friends at the family home at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at 4271 N. Sasbo Bluff Loop in Meadow Lakes. Harlan D. Gabbard will officiate.
Smith was born Sept. 26, 1924 in Iowa where she completed high school before coming to Alaska and staying until 1994. She came back to Alaska in 2001, living in Wasilla until her death.
Her children wrote, “Mom loved to make people laugh or smile. She was a very giving woman.”
She is survived by daughters Dana Thompson of Big Lake, Janis Beickovsky of Seabeck, Wash., and Paula of DelRay Beach, Fla.; sons Andrew Guthrie of Anderson, Calif., and Karl Smith; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren and counting.
She is predeceased by son Steven Guthrie, who died in Vietnam.
Her ashes will be scattered in Hood Canal in Washington State.
Valley Funeral Homes & Crematory of Wasilla and Palmer are assisting the family.
