Wasilla resident Jay E. Ober 72, passed away peacefully with his family by his side May 7, 2013, at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. He had a great sense of humor, we even heard him chuckle shortly before his last breath. His unconditional love and knowledge will be greatly missed.

He left his family the greatest gift of all, confirmation that he was saved and knew the Lord.

Services are at 2 p.m., May 21 at Kings Chapel in Wasilla with Pastor Daniel officiating.

Jay was born Nov. 13, 1940, in Lancaster, Penn., to Harry and Elizabeth Ober, the youngest of five children. He came to Alaska in 1963, serving in the Army, making Alaska his home. He was self-employed as a mechanic and business owner for most of his life.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, June Ober; daughter, Angel Strik (Phil); daughter, Lainey Petersen (Cory); son, Billy Christensen (Heather); son, Richard Hacker III (Crystal); and our special addition, Gavin Washburn (Shannon). He was blessed with many grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was well known for building small-block Chevrolet racing engines. His favorite things to do were to go racing, spending the summers at the dirt track. His favorite number was 77 and at one time he had a team of race cars all sporting his number. He also enjoyed watching TV, and his TV time was focused on NASCAR and Western movies. He loved to cook and garden. His favorite place to visit was Reno/Lake Tahoe, where he married June.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jay Ober Memorial Fund, in care of Cremation Society of Alaska, 7216 Lake Otis Parkway, Anchorage, AK 99507.

Arrangements were entrusted to Cremation Society of Alaska. Words of comfort can be shared with the family at alaskacremation.com.
