Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Jerry Tillman Akes, 67, of Big Lake lost his battle with cancer on Dec. 13, 2014. Jerry passed away at Mat-Su Regional Hospital surrounded by family and friends.
Jerry was born Jan. 3, 1947, in Shreveport, Louisiana, he is the son of the late Jane and JT Akes. He grew up in a large, loving family with five sisters and three brothers.
Jerry was a Master Boilermaker for more than 30 years. This profession was demanding, dangerous and kept him away from his family for long periods of time. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War time period. Jerry learned his skill set as a Boilermaker in the U.S. Navy and continued his trade until officially retiring from the Boilmakers Local 502 Union in 2005.
Jerry never really retired from his trade. He continued to share his wealth of knowledge and expertise by teaching the younger Boilermakers.
Jerry was a best friend to numerous people and was always willing to help people. He will be remembered for his compassionate presence as well as his hard work ethic.
Jerry Tillman Akes is survived by his children Charlene Steele, Christina Schlichten and Benjamin Criswell and his dear friend, Raymond Pendergast. His siblings Joyce Williams, Ricky Akes, David Akes, Linda Mire, Martha Hutchanson, Caroline Russel, and Tharissia Messina. He is also survived by many friends and family members. He is preceded in death by his parents Jane and JT Akes, his son Matthew Criswell and brother Clifford Akes.
Jerry›s funeral service is 2 p.m., Feb. 8 at at Susitna Valley American Legion Post 35 at 4160 Tweed Court Wasilla, with a potluck reception to follow at Sully›s in Wasilla. Per Jerry›s request, his ashes will be spread in Big Lake, Alaska. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jerry›s life.
