Jesse Lee Owens

Jesse Lee Owens departed this life on Feb. 26, 2020, at the age of 68. Jesse graduated from high school in Willow Springs, Mo. and moved to Palmer, Alaska in 1971. In 1977, Jesse was involved in an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. However, he went on to accomplish a great many things in his lifetime, including obtaining a PhD degree in the field of neuro-biology. He had a successful career as a professor at the University of Alaska for twenty years doing scientific research and teaching medical students. He was a recognized authority in the field of neuro-biology and was a frequent consultant for educational institutions throughout the world.

Jesse loved adventure and traveled all over the world. He delighted in seeing new places and exploring new cultures. He made friends wherever he went and was a great inspiration to many people.

Jesse is survived by his loving partner, Gwendolyn Lupher, of Eagle River, Alaska; mother, Zelma Weaver; sister, Darlene Romero (Raymond); nephew, Raymond Finley; niece, Angelina Neilson; and her children, Brandon and Brittney Neilson, all who reside in Pueblo West, CO. He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Owens.

Jesse was loved by his family and will be greatly missed by them and his many friends for his courageous journey through life, his generosity, and his abundant sense of humor.
