85 was born May 6, 1934 in Inverness, Alabama and died February 20, 2020 in Willow, Alaska.
He first came to Alaska in 1958 with his father and then returned with his father, mother and family to make it his home in 1959. Nicknamed “Sonny” by his parents at a young age. Sonny dedicated his life to working in his company, JA Spain & Sons Inc; he trained his sons, grandsons, great grandsons and numerous other young men in the equipment operations field. Sonny was respected and admired by all of his employees, co-workers and friends for his determination. Sonny belonged to the First Baptist Church of Willow, the last of the original Charter Members.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Ola Louise Spain, his sons Joe “Butchie” Spain, James “Danny” Spain and John “Johnny” Spain.
Sonny leaves behind his wife of 15 years Ernestine Barney, two sons and their families; Mike Spain and his wife Michelle also David Spain and his wife Charlotte. As well as his nephew Jimmy Spain and his wife Tina. His family included an unlimited supply of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He also leaves behind stepdaughter Becky Simpson and stepson Ernest Barney both of which were dear to his heart.
A service for family and close friends will be performed by Pastor Charles Worthy.
