John Conrad Kornmann, 70, died Aug.19, 2014, at Mat-Su Regional Hospital in Palmer from cancer. He was born on Nov. 1, 1943, in Vancouver, Washington.

He came to Alaska in 1975 and worked for Shaffer Logging from 1975 to 1983 in Kodiak and Afognak. He then worked for Consteel from 1983 to 2004 in Wasilla and then for Valley Block & Concrete from 2004 to present.

John enjoyed traveling in Alaska and Canada, welding, building and construction, growing his own food, reading and chopping wood for his fire. He was a donor to the Anchorage Rescue Mission.

According to his family, “John’s job at Valley Block was his daily joy and satisfaction in life. Always busy on his homestead, never idle carving out his own little piece of heaven in beautiful Alaska, a place he really loved. By this he showed his family how much he loved them, forever giving and doing. He had once stated that he never felt for want, had all he ever needed or wanted in life, very content and felt blessed in this life. God Bless all of the people who helped John thru the hard time of his terminal illness. He will be missed and loved by all he touched. We Love You Dad!”

John is survived by his wife, Dixie Lee Kornmann; four daughters, KIimberly Short, Rebecca Ramilo, Tami Spencer and Michelle Folsom; two brothers, Jim and Richard Kornmann; four sisters, Mary Overmeyer, Lianne Engles, Jennifer Wolfman and Francis Fickes; 10 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m., Aug. 23 at Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel, Wasilla Chapel. A celebration of life is from 3 to 5 p.m., Aug. 24 at the homestead, 2694 Birch Harbor in Houston. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. at the homestead.
