Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

John Darl Carr, 78, Palmer died recently.
He was born in West Virginia on July 4, 1934, to Ernie and Bessie Carr. He graduated from high school in Spokane, Wash., in 1952 and served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1956. While serving with the Marines, John was awarded the National Defense and United Nations Service, Good Conduct and the Korean Service medals.
John moved to Alaska in 1969 and was a member of the Teamster Union Local 959. He worked for Weaver Brothers, Sea-Land, Mammoth Trucking, Kodiak Oilfield Haulers and United Freight. He retired in 1988.
An avid moose, bear and sheep hunter, John could think of nothing he would rather do than visit the Nelchina basin for fly-in hunts and was known to travel out of state in search of Rocky Mountain elk, mule and white-tail deer. John’s favorite times were being in the Alaska wilderness and driving down the road with an exhaust trail rolling out behind him.
Surviving are his daughter, Catherine Carr who works with an international humanitarian organization; son, Ben, a high school principal in Mountain View, Wyo.; daughter-in-law Dwan, and their children, Kendall, Race and Logan; sisters, Dolores Shell of Anchorage and Judith Stone of Prescott, Ariz.; brother, Joseph Carr of Prescott, Ariz.; and many nieces, nephews and close friends throughout Alaska and the Lower 48.
Services are at 11 a.m., Feb. 23 at United Protestant Church in Palmer, 713 S. Denali St. A reception will follow.
