Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

John Frederick McCaslin, 76, died Feb. 8, 2013, at the Alaska Veterans and Pioneers Home in Palmer.
He was born Sept. 23, 1936, in Lubec, Maine. He graduated from high school in Lubec. He then joined the Army and served four years. After that, he was in the U.S. Coast Guard for 30-plus years. He moved to Juneau in 1970, then to Anchorage. He was also a bus driver for the Anchorage School District.
John was a Protestant. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, reading, traveling, dog Sarah, friends and family and being in Alaska. He was a loving husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather and a friend to many.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara McCaslin of Alaska; sons, Peter John (Kimberly) McCaslin of Alaska and Paul Thomas McCaslin of Maine; daughters, Lisa (Steven) Nutt of Maine, Susan Gifford of Maine and Ellen (Jason) Webb of Alaska; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his pet Yorkshire terrier, Sarah.
Visitation is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Feb. 14 at Kehl’s Palmer Mortuary. A military service is at 1 p.m. on Fort Richardson at the National Cemetery and a celebration of life follows at 3 p.m. at American Legion Post 15 on Outer Springer Loop in Palmer for family and friends. A memorial service is at 1:30 p.m., Feb. 15 at the Veterans and Pioneers Home in Palmer.
