Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Wasilla resident John H. Gamez, 52, passed away suddenly the night of June 11, 2014, in Wasilla.
A viewing for family and friends is at 1 p.m., June 18 with a celebration of life beginning at 2 p.m., at the Valley Funeral Home, 151 East Herning Ave., Wasilla.
Following the services the family will host a gathering at the Gamez residence. Questions may be directed to the family at 232-3214 or 376-5811.
John was born on March 9, 1962, in San Antonio, Texas, and moved to Wasilla in 1992 where he lived ever since. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp. He was self-employed in the flooring and construction industry.
John was very passionate for baseball and was a coach for numerous teams. He had the privilege to coach his son’s team.
“John was a very caring, loving, and generous man. Those who knew him were truly blessed. He loved being anyplace that his family was whether at the ice rink, baseball/softball field or even the golf course.
There are so many more things I can tell you about John, but those of you that truly knew him know what he was like, and that is what we will keep with us. “He will be missed more than words can ever say!” wrote the family.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Games; daughter, Elisa Gamez; son, Alexander Gamez; step-son, Sean Moore all of Wasilla; sister, Sylvia H Gamez; brothers, Blas H. Gamez and Danny Lee Gamez of San Antonio, Texas; brother, Andrew H. Gamez of Palmer; mother-in-law, Geraldine Cooper; and in-laws, Kelly and Julie Haug of Wasilla, Bobby and Earlene Berg of Kodiak, Marc and Sandy Taylor of Anchorage and Joe Cooper of Soldotna; and numerous aunts, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Conception JR (Blu) and Jack Gamez; his father, Conception Valle Gamez; his sister, Cecila Castro; and his mother, Ophelia Hernandez Gamez.
