Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Palmer resident John David Jarvis, 80, died at the Elmendorf Hospital on June 24, 2008.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. June 28 at Kehl’s Palmer Mortuary Chapel.
Jarvis was born May 6, 1928, in Marietta, Ohio. He completed 12 years of schooling and one year of college at Ohio State College.
He then served in the military and was in the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. Jarvis came to Alaska in 1958. He lived in Anchorage for 22 years and then lived between Palmer and Beluga for the rest of his time here. This past year he lived at Palmer Pioneer Home.
Some of the places he was employed at include Turbirve Boiler Tech. Electrical Plant, U.S. Rubber Co. in Ohio and Knik Arm Power Plant in Anchorage. He also did commercial fishing from 1964 to 2002 at Beluga.
Jarvis also belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Marietta, Ohio, and was a member of the VFW in Marietta.
His special interests were trap shooting and playing tennis. In his younger days, he was an avid sportsman and athlete, playing football, basketball and running track.
His family wrote, “John held the discus record for several years in Marietta.”
Jarvis is survived by his brother, Fred Jarvis Jr.; wife, Martha Lynn; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Crover F. and Carmen Elizabeth Jarvis; sisters, Gloria Brooker and Janette Juiqley; and brother, Harold Ray Jarvis.
