John Robert (Johnny Bob) Reed, 75, died Sept. 27, 2013, at home in Palmer surrounded by loved ones and friends.

A service is at 1 p.m., Oct. 27 at the Palmer Depot. A potluck will follow.

John was born March 4, 1938, in Hayes, Kan. He moved to Alaska in June 1938 and graduated from Palmer High in 1956. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to1960, receiving the Good Conduct Medal.

Over the years he lived in Palmer, Kodiak, Fairbanks and Anchorage, and worked as a boxer, bartender, explosive setter, miner, commercial fisherman, in real estate, as a chemical dependency counselor for the prisons and as an Alaska Cab driver.

He married Maude Elaine Reed on Oct. 1, 1996, in Palmer. John received many awards for volunteer work in substance abuse, as a vice president of the Nugen’s Ranch Board of Directors and was a lifetime member of the Palmer Elks. He enjoyed golf and more golf.

His family wrote: “God has called another home to help out.”

Surviving are his spouse, Maude Elaine Reed of Palmer; sisters, Margaret Ann Little of Sun City, Ariz., and Sally Jean Worledge of Palmer; son, Phillip Robert Reed of Old Harbor; daughter, Susan A. Reed of Wasilla; daughters and sons-in-law, Harmony Z. and James Scott of Shelton, Wash., and Crystal S. and Levi Young-Gustafson of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, K-Dawn Clawson of Palmer; son, James T. Clawson of Palmer; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Christopher Gentry of Columbus, Ga., and Juanita and Terrence Whetham of Maysville, Wash.; brother and sister-in-law, James P and Debra Frankford of Anchorage; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Milton David and Margaret Snodgrass; and his parents, John Hogue and Agnes Isabel Reed.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Cremation Society of Alaska/Mat-Su.
